Snowboarding Facts for Newbies

What is Snowboarding?

Snowboarding is a dynamic winter sport that blends elements of surfing, skateboarding, and skiing. It involves descending snowy slopes on a single board, with your feet strapped in sideways. Popularized in the U.S. in the 1960s, it combines balance, speed, style, and adrenaline.

A Brief History

Modern snowboarding traces its roots to 1965 when Sherman Poppen invented the "Snurfer" in Michigan. In the '70s, visionaries like Jake Burton and Tom Sims refined the concept. By 1998, snowboarding debuted in the Olympics and quickly became one of the world’s most thrilling winter sports.

How to Start Snowboarding

Preparation is key. Before heading to a resort, it’s essential to become familiar and comfortable with your snowboard setup. Snowboarding is physically demanding — involving movements like sitting, standing, rolling, hopping, and sliding with one foot strapped in. These should be practiced in advance on stable, non-slippery ground.

Start out in a garden or open grassy field with plenty of space around you. If you lose balance, you’ll want to land safely without hitting anything. The goal is to have fun — and that means staying injury-free. Avoid practicing indoors, especially in living rooms, as snowboards can easily damage floors and furniture. Instead, work on putting your bindings on and off, learning how to balance, and moving around with one foot attached.

Once confident, move to a gentle grassy slope to simulate gliding and controlling movement. This helps build strength and coordination. Only then should you consider progressing to dry slopes or indoor centers.

This method builds confidence and reduces frustration or injury on your first resort visit. Snowboarding, like swimming, is more fun when you feel ready.
